About Fort Bragg Fort Bragg was founded as "Camp Bragg" in 1918 in the Army's effort to increase it's artillery training capabilities during World War I. It later launched it's airborne diviision in 1931 with formal Airborne facilities being established in the 1950's. It has since become one of the largest military bases in the world and the largest Army base in the world with over 50,000 military and civilian employees housed on the 250 square mile facility including the esteemed Green Berets airborne division, the special operations command, and the Army's largest troop support division. The size of the base places it in six different counties but the majority of the facility lies Cumberland and Hoke Counties including the auxillary training facility known as Camp MacKall. Located just outside of the city of Fayetteville North Carolina, Fort Bragg is a leading force in the local economy and a large city on it's own with over 5,000 military housing units, shopping centers, restaurants, a large medical facility that services active duty and retired military members, over 20 million s.f. of office buildings, numerous schools and churchesand 183 recreational facilities including golf courses, lakes, a bowling alley, movie theatres and more. And, if you are looking for off-base recreation there is plenty to do in the surrounding communities including snow skiing, fishing and hunting.
Fort Braggs' future is bright as it has been chosen as part of the 2005 BRAC (Base re-aligment and Closure act) which could bring the 4th Brigade Combat Team, the 82nd Airborne Division, and European based forces to the base. This expansion is slated to take place between 2006 and 2011 but could exceed the 2011 date for completion. And the final plan as to what units will relocate to and from Fort Bragg is not yet in place but growth here seems inevitable.
